What to bring hiking

If you’re planning on hitting the trails this summer, you might be wondering what to bring along. Here’s a quick guide to help you out!

Hiking gear

There is a lot of hiking gear that you can buy, but you don’t need to spend a lot of money to hike. Here is a list of essential gear for hiking that won’t break the bank.

-Hiking boots or shoes: A good pair of hiking boots or shoes is important for traction and support on the trail. You can spend a lot of money on hiking boots, but you don’t need to. A good pair of trail running shoes will work just as well and cost a lot less.

-Socks: Choose socks made from synthetic materials like polyester or wool. These materials will wick moisture away from your feet to keep them dry and comfortable. Avoid cotton socks, which will absorb moisture and become sweaty and uncomfortable.

-Shorts or pants: Choose shorts or pants made from quick-drying fabrics like nylon or polyester. These fabrics will help keep you cool and comfortable on the trail by wicking away sweat. Avoid jeans, which are made from cotton and will hold moisture next to your skin.

-T-shirt or long-sleeved shirt: Again, choose shirts made from quick-drying synthetic fabrics like polyester or nylon. These fabrics will wick sweat away from your skin to keep you cool and comfortable on the trail.

-Hat: A hat with a brim will protect your face from the sun and help keep you cool. Choose a hat that is breathable so it won’t make your head sweaty. A baseball cap or visor is a good choice.

-Sunscreen: Apply sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 to all exposed skin before you start hiking. Reapply sunscreen every two hours, even on cloudy days, to prevent sunburns.

-Sunglasses: Sunglasses with 100% UV protection will protect your eyes from the harmful rays of the sun. Choose wraparound style glasses for the best protection.

What to wear for hiking

On your feet, you’ll need a good pair of hiking boots or shoes. Your footwear should be comfortable, with grippy soles to give you traction on uneven terrain. In warm weather, breathable socks will help keep your feet cool and dry; in cold weather, choose wool or synthetic socks that will insulate your feet and help prevent blisters.

Your clothing should be able to protect you from the elements while keeping you comfortable. In warm weather, light-colored shirts and pants made from synthetic or wool fabrics will help keep you cool and dry by wicking away sweat. In cold weather, you’ll need layers of clothing to keep you warm; a base layer of synthetic or wool fabric next to your skin will wick away sweat, a middle layer of insulation (wool or synthetic fleece) will trap heat, and a waterproof outer layer will protect you from rain, snow, and wind.

You’ll also need a hat to protect your head from the sun in warm weather and from the cold in winter. A bandanna or neck gaiter can be useful in both hot and cold weather as well—use it to wipe away sweat in summer or cover your face in winter

Hiking packs

Whether you’re venturing out for a day hike or a week-long backpacking trip, you need to bring some basic necessities with you. Most importantly, you need a pack to carry all your gear. While there are many different types and styles of packs on the market, it’s important to choose one that is comfortable and fits well. Once you have your pack, it’s time to start packing. Here are a few things you should always make sure to bring along on your hike:

Hiking footwear

Your hiking footwear should be comfortable, supportive and ideally waterproof. If you are planning on hiking in wet conditions, then it is worth investing in shoes or boots that are made from waterproof materials such as Gore-tex.

Hiking poles

Hiking poles are a great addition to any hiker’s arsenal, and there are a few things to consider when choosing the best pair for you. First, decide if you want telescoping or fixed-length poles. Telescoping poles are great for transportation and storage, but fixed-length poles offer more stability on uneven terrain.

Next, consider the materials from which your poles will be made. Aluminum is lightweight and strong, but carbon fiber is even lighter and just as strong. Whichever material you choose, make sure your poles have comfortable grips and adjustable straps that won’t rub your hands raw.

Finally, think about the terrain on which you’ll be using your poles. If you’re hiking in snow or mud, you’ll want tips that can handle those surfaces. Rubber tips are great for all-purpose use, but carbide tips offer more traction on harder surfaces like rock or concrete. No matter what your hiking needs are, there’s a pole out there that’s perfect for you!

Hydration for hiking

Adults should drink at least 2 to 4 cups (16 to 32 ounces) of water per hour while hiking, more if it is hot or humid. Signs of dehydration include thirst, muscle cramps, headache, lightheadedness and swollen ankles. Hikers should carry enough water to stay hydrated for the entire hike.

Water is the best fluid to drink while hiking. Sports drinks can also help replace electrolytes lost through sweating, but they can be high in calories and sugar.

Hiking nutrition

When you’re planning your hike, be sure to pack plenty of snacks and a few meals to keep your energy up. It’s important to eat often while you’re hiking, even if you don’t feel hungry. A good rule of thumb is to eat something every two hours or so. And, of course, don’t forget to pack plenty of water.

Here are some things to keep in mind when you’re planning your hiking nutrition:

-Choose foods that are high in calories and easy to digest.
-Avoid sugary snacks–they might give you a quick burst of energy, but you’ll crash soon after.
-Pack foods that won’t spoil in the heat or cold.
-Opt for single-serving items so you don’t have to carry around a lot of extra weight.
-Bring along a variety of snacks so you don’t get bored with what you’re eating.

-Nuts and seeds

First-aid for hiking

In case of an emergency, it’s important to be prepared with a well-stocked first-aid kit. Here are some essential items to include:

-Bandages of various sizes
-Adhesive tape
-Sterile gauze pads
-Antiseptic wipes
-Hydrocortisone cream
-Antibiotic ointment
-Pain relievers
Make sure to pack other necessary items as well, such as sunscreen, insect repellent, and plenty of water.
